SPRINGFIELD, NJ – The week features Union County hold “National Night Out” on Tuesday, August 1, at Meisel Park in Springfield.  Freeholder Chair Bruce Bergen said, “National Night Out provides an opportunity for members of our law enforcement community to provide important information to residents to assist them in keeping themselves and their family's safe,"The activities last until 8 p.m. and are followed by the animated adventure comedy movie “Secret Life of Pets”.

On Wednesday, the Springfield Free Public Library features and Author Spotlight at 7 p.m.  Brian Platzer will discuss his debut novel Bed-Stuy is Burning.   It is his first appearance outside of New York City.

From the library’s website:  Bed-Stuy is Burning, Platzer’s debut novel, was released by Atria Press on July 11 and is being described as “Do the Right Thing” meets The Bonfire of the Vanities.” New York Times bestselling author Ann Packer describes the novel as being “about marriage, gentrification, parenthood, race, and the dangerous bargains we make with ourselves,” and describes Platzer as a “tremendously accomplished young writer.”

Brian Platzer has an MFA from the Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars and a BA from Columbia University. His writing has appeared often in The New Yorker’s Shouts and Murmurs and McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, as well as in The New York Times, the New Republic, Salon and elsewhere. He lives with his wife and two young sons in Bed-Stuy and teaches middle school English in Manhattan. The reading at the Springfield Free Public Library will be his first appearance outside of New York City.
