CRANFORD – The Union County College Foundation celebrated its Silver Anniversary Scholarship Gala on Oct. 13, 2017, at The Westwood in Garwood, NJ. The event raised more than $240,000 for scholarships for students, which will help further the core mission of the College, to provide students with an affordable, accessible, and quality education.

This year, the Foundation honored Sherry Heidary, Associate Professor of Chemistry in the College’s STEM division, with the first Fiat Lux Award and Mr. Greg Flood,  Prof. Heidary received this award for her years of commitment to Union’s students and her unwavering support of the mission of the Foundation. Mr. Flood was presented his award for his dedicated philanthropic support to the Foundation and the Union County community. More than 250 attendees joined the Foundation to recognize these outstanding role models for Union County College students.

The evening began with a silent auction during a vivacious cocktail hour. This was followed by a delicious dinner, during which awards were given and calls for support were held. Mr. Gordon Vickers, the parent of a Union graduate and scholarship donor, spoke about his son’s success at the College thanks to the incredibly supportive faculty and staff that helped transform his life. Mr. Vickers spoke about the caring, supportive, high-quality faculty at Union, in particular Prof. Sherry Heidary and how she helped reawaken his son’s passion for life sciences. After Mr. Vickers’ speech, an appeal for donations to support the cost of tuition and books was held.
