What is the Tapestry of Springfield? How Does it Compare to its Neighbors?

SPRINGFIELD, NJ – According to the ESRI (www.esri.com), the largest group of people in Springfield are characterized as City Lights at 41% of the households, followed by Urban Chic at 24% and Golden Years at 11%.  These are three of ESRI’s Tapestry™ 67 segments meant to give a description of the nation’s residential areas.  What these three groups describe is a more diverse community than most of its neighbors with a mix of homeowners and renters that work mostly in professional occupations and earn above average incomes.

ESRI description for the largest group is “City Lights, a densely populated urban market, is the epitome of equality.  The wide-ranging demographic characteristics of residents mirror their passion for social welfare and equal opportunity.”   Next, “Urban Chic residents are professionals that live a sophisticated, exclusive lifestyle.” Finally, Golden Years refers to those close to, or in, retirement; but still very active.  Springfield is the only town where this group ranks in the top three.

For the communities in the surrounding zip codes (figure 1), the most common characterizations were Top Tier, City Lights, and Pleasantville.  Top Tier households represent the wealthiest tapestry.  It is not a description of the top three used to describe Springfield; but it is applied to two thirds of the surrounding zip codes.  Pleasantville is applied to four of the nine surrounding zip codes and two words used to describe it are “prosperous domestically” with slightly older couples.
