The Millburn Free Public Library is pleased to welcome Claudio Roditi and Abelita Mateus to perform their jazz program Brazilian Colors on Friday, May 11, 2018 at 2:00 p.m.
Brazilian Colors is a unique concert highlighting beautiful Brazilian bossa novas and sambas played by two exceptional musicians. Both have left their native Brazil to pursue their dream of combining jazz with Brazilian music. Listeners will experience the lyrical quality of Brazilian music through instrumental pieces as well as songs sung in Brazil’s expressive native language, Portuguese.
Rio de Janeiro‒born Claudio Roditi has an international career of over forty years. He has performed with jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Rouse, and McCoy Tyner, as well as Latin jazz stars such as Tito Puente and Paquito D’Rivera. Roditi has over twenty-five CDs to his credit as a leader. His album Brazilliance x 4 was nominated for a Grammy in the “Best Latin Jazz” category, and he also was nominated for his performance on Ettore Stratta’s Symphonic Bossa Nova.
A native of São Paulo, Abelita Mateus began classical piano studies in her teens. She gradually developed a passion for jazz which brought her to the United States to study Jazz Performance at William Paterson University. Abelita now performs with the Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Cuban Project and has also worked with several legendary Brazilian artists: trombonist Raul de Souza and multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal. Her recently released CD Vivenda is gaining a lot of attention.
The program is free to all and is appropriate for adults and families. This event is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Millburn Library. The Millburn Library is located at 200 Glen Ave., Millburn, NJ 07041 and can be reached at 973-376-1006.
