Book to Plate: Dishing Up New Jersey Hosted at The Book House

MILLBURN, NJ - Meet New Jersey native and author, John Holl who searched every county in the state of New Jersey, from Sussex County to Cape May, to find the best recipes the state has to offer. His book Dishing Up® New Jersey is a rich and unique cookbook celebrating the foods, flavors, cultures, and traditions of the Garden State. Take a trip “down the shore” for funnel cake and oysters, or hit up a diner for a pork roll, egg, and cheese sandwich. New Jersey natives know that their state is where it’s at for the best eats around.

The recipes feature New Jersey grown fresh produce, tomatoes, corn, cranberries, blueberries, and apples, along with deep-fried boardwalk treats, late-night diner bites, and recipes contributed by family farms, food trucks, old-school delis, famous bakeries, local breweries, and more.

In this book, Holl profiles the proud people behind the food and drink who have contributed to the state’s best cuisine.

Guest to this fun event will get to sample some of New Jersey’s best dishes from purveyors and chefs across the state while listening to Holl’s tales of his adventures to capture a huge array of ethnic heritages and food traditions in New Jersey including the famous "sloppy joe" from Town Hall Deli in South Orange, Rosemary Citrus Soda from Small World Coffee in Princeton and Holl's mother's Irish Soda Bread.

It Is Time To Federally Ban Assault Rifles

August 8, 2019

Another massacre in our country; more thoughts and prayers. And again perpetrated with a weapon of war of unlimited ammunition capacity. Unfortunately, thoughts and prayers alone are woefully deficient without action.

It is time to ban assault rifles; period. But this is not a novel idea as it was banned under President Clinton. So instead of saying that we need to ...

Where Do We Start the Larger Conversation About Guns?

Let's talk about our rights and our freedoms.

How many were free to shop at a Wal-Mart last two Sundays ago without fear that El Paso copycat would announce himself with the staccato fire of an AR-15?

You saw the stampede in the theater district in New York City when a motorcycle backfired. And the evacuation of a Wal-Mart in Union because of a false report.

We may have freedoms, but ...

In Praise of Fútbol, the Game We Call Soccer

What I’ve learned in my travels to Europe and South America in the last couple of years is how refreshing it is to get away from English.

Not being able to understand the banter of language around you is a chance to luxuriate in your own thoughts. You are in a crowd, but not part of it, free of the irritating banality of most conversations.

In a strange land I can sit and be oblivious ...
