SPRINGFIELD, NJ - At Monday night's school board meeting, the Springfield Board of Education took the time to honor students throughout the district for their artistic talent. The selected winners from each school were presented with framed copies of their work in front of friends and family who came out to see them honored.
School board president Scott Silverstein said that he always enjoys this night each school year, and that the art awards always make for the best meeting environment. For Silverstein, it personally puts him in a good mood.
"it's the best part of every year," Silverstein said. "Getting to see all of our students from pre-k all the way through high school seniors take part in showing their artistic talents and showing how our teachers are able to coax the maximum ability out of each one, and it's just fantastic to see a room full of people, all with smiles on their faces."
In Edward V. Walton school, Aubrey Prasarn, Reis Gerson, Camilla Fallas and Mara Chrystal won for the pre-k and kindergarten categories. Gabriella Awadallah and Valerie Castro received first grade honors, while Joudy Mohamed and Blake Aichroth took home the top prize for second grade.
At James Caldwell Elementary School, Vittoria Santos, Samantha Sainato and Jules Keller-Orlando were the winners of the top prize in third, fourth and fifth grades respectively. Their Thelma L. Sandmeier Elementary School counterparts Austin Lewis, Yve Lieberman and Sari Racusin won for grades three, four and five as well.
In Florence M. Gaudineer Middle School, Maya Divorchick and Noa Zylbershlag won for grade six. Laeiylah Lopez and Celeste Palermo were crowned with the top spots in seventh grade and in eighth grade, Aspyn Lee and Julia Gage won the contest.
And up at Jonathan Dayton High School, the winners were split into digital and studio art categories. in the studio art category, Jeremy Greiss, Jose Miguel Suncion, Gabriella Zambrano-Ortegon and Mary Jane D'Angelo all took home honors. In the digital art category, Alexa Montagna, Rebecca Greenman, Maria Gryzbowski and Julia Horowitz won.
