SPRINGFIELD, NJ — In a decision months in the making, the Springfield Board of Education officially voted to appoint a replacement for outgoing Springfield Superintendent Michael Davino at Wednesday afternoon's rescheduled meeting.

Rachel Goldberg was voted in unanimously as the new Superintendent of Schools in Springfield, effective at the beginning of the next school year on July 1, 2020. The appointment is for a four-year contract which was approved by Union County’s Executive County Superintendent.

Davino, the outgoing superintendent, has served in his position for over 15 years, having been hired by the board back in 2003. One of his key programs during his tenure as superintendent was a push for a one-to-one laptop program for students in the district.

After making a career shift to education in 2003, Goldberg substituted as an elementary special education teacher in Elizabeth before becoming a high school English teacher. Earning her Master's Degree from Harvard University Graduate School of Education in 2007, she returned to Elizabeth, where she became a Supervisor and Director of Staff Development.

In 2014, she moved on to her next role, as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction in Passaic. Her work in that district spans from building early literacy in pre-kindergarten through the development of career pathways and dual enrollment programs for high school students, where she has worked until now.

“We are delighted to announce that Rachel Goldberg is the Board’s unanimous selection to be our next Superintendent of Schools,” Board President Marc L. Miller said. “The entire Board looks forward to working with her when her term begins with the new school year on July 1.”

The process of selecting Goldberg started in October of 2019, when the board hired R-Pat Solutions as its outside search consultant. After a period of public input, including an open forum and a survey, R-Pat transmitted 68 applications to the board for the position.

The final data from the survey was composed of 693 responses, which included 445 parents of current Springfield students, 100 people who do not currently have children in the Springfield Public Schools, 130 members of the district’s staff, and 18 who identified as “Other,” who were generally people who fit into more than one category.

Of those 68 candidates who applied, 21 were invited in for screening interviews. Following a review of that process and the submitted applications, the entire Board interviewed 11 of the 21 candidates. Four of those 11 candidates were invited back for a second round of interviews, again with the entire Board.

Goldberg was the Board’s unanimous choice after the second round of interviews was completed. 

“We spent a great deal of time looking at what the district needs in its next leader as well as the qualities that the community as a whole identified as areas of focus,” Laura Gamarekian, Board Vice President said. “We are confident that we have found the right person to build upon the district’s success and help take us to the next level.”

As for Goldberg, she is excited to join the board in July and begin her tenure.

“Springfield is a dynamic community committed to providing extraordinary learning experiences in their schools," Goldberg said. "I am honored to join the team of educators working to support the academic and social-emotional needs of Springfield students, and I look forward to meeting the students, families, and community members we serve.”

Goldberg resides in South Orange with her husband and three children. She is currently studying at Seton Hall University, where she is pursuing her doctorate.
