SPRINGFIELD, NJ — A donation from the Springfield Rotary Club, made yesterday, should help keep the first aid squad supplied as the deal with potential cases of COVID-19 in the field.

Yesterday afternoon, several members from the rotary club donated over 5300 latex and nitrile gloves, along with 60 bottles of hand sanitizer, to the squad. Additionally, a dozen homemade masks, made by Rev. Rhonda Myers of the Presbyterian Church were also donated to the squad.

Joe Voorhees, the Supply Sergeant for the Springfield First Aid Squad spoke about the difficulty organizations have in obtaining supplies like gloves during the pandemic.

"These are items that e use constantly," Voorhees said. "And we never have a problem obtaining. Until something like this happens. If we ran out of gloves nay other day of the week, we'd be alright, no problem, we'd place an order. But now you place one and it doesn't show up. So trying to just get the tools we need to get the job done, it makes our job that much harder."

Voorhees continued, "We have a dedicated crew of volunteers and per diems that are answering all the calls, but we need this stuff to make sure they can go out the door safely."

As Voorhees noted, this donation follows a pattern of other donations made by those in town, which has shown a caring side of those who live in town, wether it is an established donation, or drop-offs with messages of support.

For Rotary president Lloyd Grossman, the donation was key to make, as he had heard about the squad's need for supplies, and rallied the other members for donations. He also spoke about what he saw as the need for donations to the squad for the work that they do.

"Unfortunately, I know it's going to be put to good use," Grossman said. "A couple of the guys told me that they really appreciated it and how they really need the stuff, and if anybody else in town is able to donate, even one or two boxes of either masks or gloves and hand sanitizer, give it to the first aid guys."
