SPRINGFIELD, NJ — In a special session meeting of the Springfield Township Committee earlier this week, the township announced the hiring of new officers to help fill vacancies in the Springfield Police Department.

Joel Lopez and John P. Dougherty were both approved to be hired as probationary police officers by the township. In addition, a third resolution also approved the hiring of an additional probationary police officer to address a vacancy.

As for questions from the public about why an officer assigned to the school could not be used to fill the vacancy, Police Chief John Cook noted that the officer in question had already served as a full-time officer for decades, and had no desire to come back again in a full time role.

Following the special session, the township committee moved to executive session, where they discussed personnel matters, including police department and fire department staffing, as well as personnel matters in the recreation department.
