NUTLEY, NJ - Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, and Nutley Police Chief Thomas J. Strumolo announced the identity of the victim of Saturday nights' house fire on Myrtle Ave. as 74-year-old Joseph Collar. Collar's wife is currently at Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville NJ. She sustained serious injuries and is listed in serious condition. 

A fire broke out in the couple's wood frame home at 17 Myrtle Ave at about 6:00 p.m. Sat. Oct. 10. Neighbors save the home engulfed in flames and called emergency services at 911. Fire units from Nutley were the first to respond. Units from Montclair, Lyndhurst, and Bloomfield responded as well.  

The victim was pronounced dead on the scene at 6:53 p.m.

According to the Essex County Prosecutors Office, the cause and origin of the fire are under investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates there was heavy fire damage in the attached garage. Witnesses in the neighborhood reported that it appeared the fire started in the garage. 

Several members of the Nutley Clergy Fellowship shared the news of the fatality in this morning's services and offered prayers for the victims, their family, as well as the first responders.   

The investigation is ongoing.
