UNION, NJ – Police have said a 50-year old man from Irvington was behind the wheel of the car that overturned Monday morning on Route 22 east.
The accident occurred at about 6:45 a.m. Monday morning when the driver ran off the road and struck a utility pole on Route 22 at the intersection of Michigan Avenue. The vehicle slid for over 200 feet before coming to rest in the right lane of Route 22 East.
Police say the driver of the 2008 Honda CRV fell asleep after working a 12-hour shift. No drugs or alcohol was detected and the driver refused medical attention.
The driver was issued a careless driving summons. Two lanes of Route 22 east were closed during the investigation and clean up.
