SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- A Scotch Plains police officer was treated for injuries at Overlook Hospital after his car was hit and seriously damaged by a driver who ran a stop sign. 

Veteran officer Joe Citarella was on his way to provide support for Mountainside and Union police who were in pursuit of a driver whom Union police chased into Mountainside (heading westbound on Route 22). The car crashed, the suspect fled on foot, and shots were fired.

As he was en route to Mountainside, Officer Citarella's vehicle was struck from the rear and seriously damaged. His injuries did not require an overnight stay; he was treated and released by the hospital, according to Scotch Plains police chief Ted Conley.
