SPRINGFIELD, NJ - In an update to a story broken earlier this week by TAPinto Springfield, authorities have announced the names of two men suspected in several attempted package thefts around town.

The two men, Jose Mendez and Jose Delacruzpena were seen by a witness attempting to steal packages off the front porches of several homes in town. When police checked the spot where both men were reportedly seen, they had already left.

Eyewitnesses described the van driven by the men as a gray vehicle with two occupants. The van was seen a short time later in a different part of town by a plainclothes detective in an unmarked vehicle.

After several minutes, the detective observed as Mendez, one of the vehicle's occupants was dropped off nearby and walked up to a house where a package was taken off of the porch. As the detective approached Mendez, he said that he was working for Amazon Return Pickup.

During questioning, Mendez allegedly became nervous and fled the scene with officers in pursuit. He then climbed a fence and attempted to hide nearby on the premises of Baltusrol Golf Course, but was apprehended a short time later. The package was recovered hidden in the bushes.

Delacruzpena, the vehicle operator, was stopped by police a short distance away. He was arrested for his role in the package theft by police, and also picked up a minor Controlled or Dangerous Substance (CDS) Charge, when officers smelled and saw marijuana in his vehicle.

For his role in the attempted package heists, Mendez was charged with eluding police and theft.
