SPRINGFIELD, NJ — While the Jonathan Dayton Bulldogs came up just short in their sectional quarterfinals matchup against top-seeded Dunellen earlier this week, the moment marked a coda to one of the most spectacular high school basketball careers the Bulldog faithful have ever seen.
Senior Guard DJ Alicea finished his varsity career with 1,540 points. The mark puts him all alone atop the leaderboard on the boys' side of the 1000-point milestone. Alicea surpasses previous boys' record holder Kevin Doty (1,246 points), who laid claim to the top spot when he played from 1974-1978. Alicea eventually scored 294 more points than Doty.
Other members of the 1,000-point club for the boys' basketball team include Chris Loeffler (1,243 points, 1994-1998), Joe Pepe (1,210 points, 1971-1974), David Steinman (1,204 points, 2004-2008) and Matt Paz (1,014 points, 1998-2002).
On the girls' side of the milestone, the all-time leading scorers mark still belongs to Jacqueline Kuczynski (2,020 points, 2005-2009).
