SPRINGFIELD, NJ - The Jonathan Dayton Boys' Track team is coming off an excellent showing at the county championship, but their lady counterparts also had a great performance as well.
Out of 24 teams competing in the Group 1 North II State Sectional Championships, Dayton placed third with 88 points. It is an impressive feat and the team's best finish since 2016.
Some recaps of the key performances are can be found below:
Senior Captain Caitlyn McTernan became a three-time Sectional Javelin Champion, winning with a throw of 124 feet. Her throw was good enough to tie currently for first in Group 1 in the State, and tie for seventeenth overall for all athletes.
It is also one of the farthest, if not the farthest, javelin throws in all of Jonathan Dayton history dating back through the 1980s. That data is being compiled and finalized by the coaches before an official announcement can be made.
McTernan also won the Triple Jump for the 1st time and placed 3rd in the High Jump. She is now a highly decorated State Sectional Champion having now been state sectional champion 3 times in the Javelin, 1 time in the High Jump, and 1 time in the Triple Jump in her storied career. True to form, she was practicing Javelin in the rain at practice to prepare for the Group 1 State Championships.
Junior Cymantha Blackmon became a two-time Sectional Champion winning the Shot Put again. She was in roughly third or fourth heading into the finals, but on her last throw threw nearly 33 feet to capture the title by one-quarter of an inch. She also took second in the discus throw.
Junior Captain Catriona Corbett placed third in the 3200 in a personal best of 12:13 & fifth in the 1600 in a time of 5:42.
Sophomore Abbey Hochreiner placed 2nd in the 800 with a time of 2:28, as well as 3rd in the 1600 with a time of 5:32. Abbey is having one of the most successful Sophomore years of any Dayton athlete in recent history.
Dayton's 4 x 400 team ran one of their best times in the last few years, placing fourth in a time of 4:18. Senior Captain Erica Carrie, Junior Kyla Greene, and Sophomores Maiya Barnhardt and Eliana McNamee all ran close to or new personal bests on their way to the finish. They are hoping to obtain a position in the State Finals Meet of Champions.
