UNION, NJ — The Jonathan Dayton High School Bulldogs (1-1) varsity ice hockey team truly came to play on Sunday night as they powered past the Bayonne High School Bees (1-2) with a convincing 5-2 victory.
Junior left wing Gary Mignone led the scoring charge with a hat trick and an assist in front of a boisterous home crowd at the Union Sports Arena. Senior center Victor Velazquez added two goals and an assist, senior right wing Brenden Smith tallied three assists and Junior defenseman Mark Cunningham added two assists while also spearheading the Bulldogs defense.
Freshman goalie Eric Serio made 12 saves to earn his first win at the high school level. Senior captain and right wing Joe Triano and junior forward Antonio Nacci each had an assist in the game.
The Bulldogs attack registered an eye-popping 55 shots on goal during the game, but the Bees goalie Shawn Agosto kept the game tight with several spectacular saves. After an early goal by Velazquez, the Bulldogs fell behind 2-1 early in the second period.
But in the middle frame, Mignone heated up and scored three consecutive goals to earn a natural hat trick and put the Bulldogs up for the rest of the game. Velazquez closed out the game with an empty net goal to send the Dayton fans home happy.
Senior Lucas Minio, and juniors Jeremy Greiss and Antonio Famiglietti logged strong ice time throughout the game. Other players who supported the effort included senior Daniel Aldenyi, junior Harry Rachel, and sophomores Gabriel Dematos, Zachary Silverstein and Giuseppe Wadowski.
Head Coach Brian Hayes and Assistant Coaches Jordan Fabi and Michael O’Brien will now get the team focused for its next game on Wednesday night against The Frisch School. Game time is at 8:50 p.m. at the Warinanco Park Ice Skating Center in Roselle/Elizabeth.
