DUNELLEN, NJ - Junior Drew Johnson scored 20 points and senior Tyje Kelton added 19 to lead top-seeded Dunellen to a dramatic 52-51 victory over ninth-seeded Dayton in the quarterfinals of the North Jersey, Section 2, Group I sectional tournament in Dunellen Wednesday.
The Destroyers (24-4), who have won four of their last five games, held a 21-17 halftime advantage and led 33-24 after three quarters and held off a late 27-19 fourth quarter by Dayton to secure the win.
Dunellen advanced to Friday’s semifinals and will host 12th-seeded Weequahic (15-8), which defeated 13th-seeded Weehawken, 63-51.
Sophomore Cameron Campbell-Miller had another strong performance, leading Dayton (12-13) with 17 points and senior guard DJ Alicea, the school’s all-time leading scorer, ended his stellar four-year career with 13 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter.
Alicea ended his senior season with 465 points (37 3-pointers) and scored in double figures in 71 of 72 games played. He finished his high school career with 1,540 points.
Junior Josh Jackson had his second straight 11-point performance and junior Mahki Cromartie posted seven with the team’s only 3-pointer for the Bulldogs, which lost for just the second time in its last five games
