VERONA, NJ — The Dayton girls basketball team needed some momentum going into their state tournament game on Monday.
They got it Thursday from two of its seniors.
Senior Michelle Bellino posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds and senior Haeley Santos added 11 points with three 3-pointers and five rebounds to lead Dayton to a 44-33 victory over Verona in Verona.
With the score tied 20-20 at halftime, Dayton used a 12-5 third quarter to take control.
Sophomore Mya Sims-Taylor posted eight points, freshman Samantha Casey chipped in with four points and eight rebounds and junior Aiyona Wood blocked six shots with four rebounds in the win.
The Bulldogs (8-16) saw its three-game losing streak snapped, improved to 3-3 over its last six games and won just for the second time on the road in its last 10 games.
State Tournament Monday: Dayton is the 14th seed in the upcoming NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 1 Sectional Tournament and will visit third-seeded Glen Ridge (11-13) in first round action on Monday, March 2 at 5:00 p.m.
Glen Ridge has lost two straight and three of its last five games.
Leading the way for Glen Ridge is sophomore Elettra Giantomenico (188 points, 36 3-pointers, 125 rebounds); senior Haleigh Pine (168 points, 21 3-pointers); sophomore Amayah Melbourne (154 points, 131 rebounds).
The winner advances to Wednesday’s quarterfinals and will play the winner between 11th-seeded Ridgefield and sixth-seeded Shabazz.
