BAYONNE, NJ — On Friday night, the first place Jonathan Dayton High School Bulldogs (5-1) varsity ice hockey team steamrolled the Bayonne High School Bees 6-0 to notch their fifth win in a row.
Senior goalie Nick Facchini was flawless on the night to earn the shutout. He was given strong support by senior captain Joe Triano and junior Mark Cunningham, who worked like a well-oiled machine in the defensive zone. Cunningham also jumped into the offensive zone to score the final goal of the game.
Seniors Victor Velazquez and Brenden Smith and junior left wing Gary Mignone continue to serve as the Bulldogs version of the “Triple Threat.” Velazquez tallied a hat trick, Mignone scored two goals and two assists, and Smith added two assists and countless body checks to the opposition.
Velasquez (12 goals, 5 assists) and Mignone (10 goals, 7 assists) each have 17 points on the season, putting them in the top 25 high school scorers in the state, according to NJ.com.
Head Coach Brian Hayes’ entire squad of skaters earned ice time against Bayonne, including seniors Lucas Minio and Daniel Aldenyi, juniors Jeremy Greiss, Antonio Famiglietti and Harry Rachel, and sophomores Giuseppe Wadowski and Zachary Silverstein. Back-up goalies sophomore Gabriel Dematos and freshman Eric Serio also supported the effort.
