Newark, NJ — The Jonathan Dayton High School Bulldogs (11-3) varsity ice hockey team won a 3-2 nail biter against the Newark East Side Red Raiders on Tuesday afternoon at the Prudential Center’s Hockey House.

Senior goalie Nick Facchini proved to be the difference in the game as Newark nearly doubled Dayton’s shot total. Facchini’s outstanding performance saved the injury-riddled Dayton team who were without three of their starting skaters.

Senior center Victor Velazquez and junior left wing Gary Mignone continued their scoring ways as Velazquez notched his 28th and 29th goals of the season, and Mignone tallied his 27th goal of the year to put Dayton ahead 3-0.

Senior captain Joe Triano and junior forward Jeremy Greiss stepped up big time in the game by adding two assists each and matching the hard-hitting Red Raiders’ physical play.

The Dayton squad struggled late in the game as Newark East Side scored two goals in the third period. But Facchini closed the door down the stretch with several clutch saves in the closing minutes.

Other players who supported the effort for Dayton included seniors Lucas Minio and Daniel Aldeniyi, juniors Antonio Famiglietti, Jordy Frei and Harry Rachel, sophomores Giuseppe Wadowski, Gabriel Dematos and Zachary Silverstein, and freshman Eric Serio.

The Bulldogs return to the ice on Friday night, Jan.31, in a home game against Kearny High School at the Union Sports Arena. Game time is 9:10 p.m.
