UNION, NJ — On Saturday night, the Jonathan Dayton High School Bulldogs (10-3) varsity ice hockey team celebrated “Senior Night” by honoring six of its players and their families in a special pre-game ceremony at Union Sports Arena.

Seniors Joe Triano, Victor Velazquez, Nick Facchini, Brendan Smith, Lucas Minio, and Daniel Aldeniyi were given recognition for their years of commitment to Dayton hockey. The ceremony served as a touching tribute to the players who will be graduating later this year.

Unfortunately, the game following the “Senior Night” ceremony was not as festive for the Bulldogs as they dropped an 8-1 decision to the Arthur L. Johnson High School Crusaders. The loss snapped the Bulldogs five game winning streak and moved ALJ up in the standings into a tie with Dayton for first place in the division.

The Dayton squad was heavily depleted as four key players were unable to suit up due to injuries and illness. Dayton’s only goal on the night was scored by senior caption Joe Triano and assisted by junior forward Harry Rachel.

The 8-1 loss was a complete reversal from Dayton’s prior meeting with ALJ when the Bulldogs skated to a 5-4 victory. The Dayton squad will look to regroup and get healthy for the final four games of the season before playoffs begin for the McMullen Division Cup.

The Bulldogs have a much-needed 10-day break before its next game on the road against Newark East Side on January 28. The team’s next home game is January 31 against Kearny High School.
