UNION, NJ — The Jonathan Dayton High School Bulldogs varsity ice hockey team (13-5-1) has had one one its finest seasons in the history of the tri-op program.
However, Dayton’s dreams of hoisting its first-ever NJIIHL McMullen Division Championship Cup did not come true as The Frisch School Cougars (10-4-3) knocked the Bulldogs out of the playoffs in a hard-fought 1-0 game at the Union Sports Arena.
The game was a scoreless battle the entire way until Frisch scored on a scramble in the crease with just under five minutes left in the final period.
Down by a goal, the Bulldogs mounted a fierce attack in the final minutes, but Frisch turned aside several quality scoring chances by senior center Victor Velazquez, junior left wing Gary Mignone, and senior defenseman captain Joe Triano.
Senior goalie Nick Facchini had a remarkable game in net, making dozens of saves to keep Dayton’s hopes alive.
Although the playoff elimination was a heartbreaker, the Dayton squad has qualified for the honor of playing in the NJSIAA ice hockey tournaments for the second year in a row under the guidance of Head Coach Brian Hayes.
Dayton‘s first game in “The States” is scheduled for Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. against the Old Bridge High School Knights at the Old Bridge Ice Rink.
