ROSELLE, NJ — The Jonathan Dayton High School Bulldogs (4-1) varsity ice hockey team continued its sizzling start to the season with a convincing 5-1 win over Newark East Side. It was the Bulldogs’ fourth victory in a row, and Head Coach Brian Hayes’ squad now sits in first place at the top of the McMullen Division.

Junior left wing Gary Mignone wasted no time getting the Bulldogs offense going early in the first period when he fired a slapshot into the net to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. Senior right wing Brenden Smith earned an assist on the play.

Later in the period, Smith raced up the ice and scored to make it 2-0. Mignone and senior center Victor Velazquez were credited with assists.

Velasquez (9 goals, 4 assists) and Mignone (8 goals, 5 assists) continued their potent offensive production in the third period. Both players are currently recognized in the top 30 high school goal scorers in the state of New Jersey. Velazquez finished the game with two goals and an assist, and Mignone totaled two goals and two assists on the night.

Senior captain and right wing Joe Triano’s earned an assist, and his leadership on the ice has been highly-visible throughout the season. His gritty two-way play paced the Bulldogs in both the offensive and defensive zones.

Triano and senior right wing Brenden Smith have also played a critical role by serving as the Bulldogs’ leaders in hits and physical play. Both talented skaters played fearless and stood strongly against the gritty, hard-hitting Red Raiders, who came up short in their attempt to intimidate the Bulldogs.

Senior goalie Nick Facchini made 19 saves on the night, and junior defenseman Mark Cunningham played another stellar game on the blue line to stymie the Red Raiders offense.

Other players who supported the 33-shot effort for Dayton included seniors Lucas Minio and Daniel Aldenyi, juniors Jeremy Greiss, Antonio Famiglietti and Harry Rachel, sophomores Giuseppe Wadowski, Gabriel Dematos and Zachary Silverstein, and freshman Eric Serio.

The Bulldogs return to the ice on Friday night, Dec. 20, in an away game at Bayonne High School. Game time is 7:15 p.m.
