UNION, NJ — After a holiday break in regular season action, the first place Jonathan Dayton High School Bulldogs (8-2) varsity ice hockey team showed no signs of slowing down as they returned to the ice and clobbered the West Orange High School Mountaineers 7-1.
The Friday night game attracted a large and loud crowd at Union Sports Arena, and junior left wing Gary Mignone sent the Dayton fans into an immediate frenzy as he scored just seven seconds into the game. Mignone would continue to have a huge offensive night tallying four goals to lead the Dayton offense.
Senior captain Joe Triano also had a big night with two goals and three assists. Triano showed his on ice leadership by teaming with junior Mark Cunningham on defense to limit the Mountaineers offense to just 14 shots on the night.
Senior Victor Velazquez added a goal and two assists. Velazquez now has 22 goals on the season and is listed on NJ.com as the leading high school goal scorer in the state. Mignone’s four goal night gave him 18 goals on the season and propelled him into the top five goal scorers in the entire state.
Senior goalie Nick Facchini (7-1) made 13 saves to continue his strong season in net.
Head Coach Brian Hayes’ entire squad of skaters logged quality minutes of ice time, including seniors Brenden Smith, Lucas Minio and Daniel Aldenyi, juniors Jeremy Greiss, Antonio Famiglietti and Harry Rachel, and sophomores Giuseppe Wadowski and Zachary Silverstein. Back-up goalies sophomore Gabriel Dematos and freshman Eric Serio also supported the effort.
The Bulldogs’ next game is a rematch in West Orange next Friday, Jan. 10, at Codey Arena. Game time is 6:45 p.m.
