BEACH HAVEN - This past Saturday, August 12 a water taxi provided by LBI Tours was scheduled to transport riders from Tuckerton Creek in Tuckerton to the Morrison's Dock in Beach Haven. The trips are part of a feasibility study to determine if there is a need for a summer water taxi service between the two towns.
LBI has the Long Beach Island shuttle service, perhaps this is another way to promote tourism on LBI and involve Tuckerton and the Tuckerton Seaport.
Currently, there is only one access road to Long Beach Island from the mainland via the Route 72 Causeway Bridge. The Southern Ocean Chamber of Commerce, Tuckerton, Beach Haven and Tuckerton Seaport officials recently met to discuss the possibility of the water taxi service. The leaders are considering putting to use a “Downtown Driven” $128,580 two-year New Jersey tourism grant from the Destination Marketing Organization.
If the testing proves the need is there, the plan is to consider putting the water taxi in effect for the summers of 2018 and 2019.
If the idea goes forward for next summer, this would be a paid service. The four groups will meet together this coming September to decide if the water taxi idea will move forward.
