LOS ANGELES, CA -- TAPintoTV Executive Producer, Brian Brodeur, spoke with drummer and Zappa Trust archivist Joe Travers about his new YouTube channel and a special YouTube streaming program he’ll be hosting on Thursday, July 9th for DW Drums.
Travers, known as the “Vaultmeister,” continues to work closely with Ahmet Zappa and the Zappa Trust to bring remastered and archival projects to the public via Universal Music Group. For information about the latest releases from the archive, visit www.zappa.com.
Now that live performers have been sidelined during the pandemic, Travers had more time on his hands than normal, and decided to publish his own YouTube channel: JT Media Content. In effect, Travers became his own archivist, pulling together clips where he can be seen backing acts like Duran Duran, Zappa Plays Zappa and Lisa Loeb.
“On YouTube, there is stuff of me out there, but it’s stuff that people shoot at shows. I thought I’ve got a whole archive of stuff I’ve accumulated myself,” Travers said. “I decided that I wanted to have a bit more control over what’s out there.” Travers said that he often watches YouTube more than television and gets “inspired by the things that I see and what people are doing,” he said, “so I just wanted to be a part of that.”
Travers can also be seen on another YouTube channel on Thursday, July 9, when he will host DW Drums’ Playlist Party, streamed live at 1pm Eastern/10am Pacific. On the show, which airs twice a week on DW’s YouTube channel, top drummers share music that has inspired them. “During this time, this is what is happening now,” explained Travers. “They’re trying to keep the ball rolling and keep things creative at a time when we’re completely stifled.”
Travers is planning a theme-oriented show of classic recorded drum solos along with “hilarious stories,” he said. “I just want to make mine really fun, I really want to make mine upbeat.”
