EAST BRUNSWICK – The Amazin’ Rams of Southern Regional lost Wednesday afternoon 5-2 to Hunterdon Central in the NJ Group IV state playoffs. The Rams took on the Central Jersey Group IV champion Red Devils at East Brunswick Tech' High School's Richard J. Cipperly Field.
Southern became SJ Group IV champions June 3 after a tremendous 6-2 victory over Lenape High School. The Rams had not gone this far in the playoffs in 50 years. This was Southern’s first sectional championship since they won the Central Group II title in 1967.
Southern’s accomplishments this season also include a trip to the Ocean County Tournament championship game for the first time since 1983 where they lost to Toms River South.
The Amazin’ Rams advanced as the No. 11 seed in South Jersey Group IV. They ended up being the champions that is an amazing feat. Southern finished the season with an overall 18-10 record.
Southern took an early 2-0 lead. The Rams loaded the bases in the bottom of the second. Vaughn Walker walked to push the first run in. Cole Markley grounded to shortstop on a fielder’s choice that drove in the second run.
Andrew Ollwerther smacked a two-run triple in the bottom of the second to tie the game. Pete Cosentino had an RBI single in the third inning to put Hunterdon Central in the lead for good at 3-2.
Hunterdon scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings to bring the score to 5-2. Hunterdon Central’s Peter Woltersdorf pitched the entire game for the victory. His season record on the mound was 8-0.
Southern had an incredible season with 12 seniors on the squad. “I am very proud of this team,” said Southern’s head coach Keith Cocuzza. “I cannot thank these players enough for such a tremendous ride this season.”
Hunterdon Central will face Millburn in the Group IV final Saturday in Toms River.
