STAFFORD - It truly was a sight to behold watching the Southern Regional football team defeat Toms River North 22-14 on Friday night on the Ron Emmert Field at Southern's Goldberger Stadium.

The Southern Regional offensive and defensive linemen not only controlled the line of scrimmage but they were able to manhandle the large Toms River North linemen for most of the contest.

Toms River North opened the scoring on a 40 yard touchdown reception by Andrew Duniluk.  The extra point was good and North led 7-0.  Southern came back quickly and tied the game on a Joe Miele one yard touchdown run and Matt Barnett extra point.

In the third quarter Toms River North took a 14 -7 lead.  It appeared that their speed and option plays were going to take over the game after Mickey Maldonado's 3 yard touchdown run.  The Rams did not let up and held their ground for the remainder of the contest and fought their way to the impressive victory.

The fourth quarter began with the Rams down 14-7.  Southern was undaunted.  They moved the ball, controlled the line of scrimmage and scored on a two yard Joe Miele touchdown.  The Rams were down 14-13 before the extra point attempt.  Almost everyone in the stadium had to be convinced that the Rams were going to kick a one point conversion to tie the contest.

Coach Donohue and his staff had another idea.  Southern elected to go for a two point conversion to go ahead.  Joe Miele succeeded on a run for that two point conversion and the Rams were ahead 15-14 with about 6:30 remaining in the contest. They would never look back.

Southern's defense held up the rest of the game.  Southern's Luke Galen intercepted a pass and ran it all the way in for a 40 yard touchdown to seal the deal. Southern notched the impressive 22-14 victory over the Mariners.

Matt Barnett's running was critical as he ran for 92 yards on 9 carries.  Matt also led the Rams in tackles with 7 on defense. John Dolphin had 11 rushes for 69 yards and Joe Miele ran for 59 yards on 16 carries for Southern.

This was a great win for Southern considering they lost a one point 24-23 heartbreaker to Central last Friday night.  Toms River North was the 10th ranked team at the Shore. The Rams are 1-1 on the season.  The Rams have a hefty challenge at home next Friday in a non-conference matchup against Manalapan. Manalapan is the number one ranked squad in the Shore led by quarterback Luke Corcione.

Southern can be proud of such a fine victory tonight.
