BARNEGAT LIGHT, NJ - The United States Coast Guard reported the following accident off the waters of Barnegat Light on Sunday via their website on Monday. The Guard medevaced three people after a boat collision took place near Barnegat Light Sunday afternoon. One person was confirmed deceased by the New Jersey State Police Department.
The collision was between two vessels — a 36-foot speed boat and a 16-foot Carolina Skiff boat. A total of seven passengers were on board the two boats involved in the crash.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay received notification from a good Samaritan reporting a boat collision in the Oyster Creek Channel at about 2:20 p.m.
Watchstanders dispatched a 29-foot Response Boat-Small boat crew from Coast Guard Station Barnegat Light.
The boat crew and a Good Samaritan recovered three people from the water and transported them to awaiting emergency medical services personnel at Station Barnegat Light for further medical attention.
“Our deepest sympathies are with the family and loved ones who were affected by this tragedy,” said Capt. Benjamin Cooper, Sector Delaware Bay commander. “We wish the injured person a full and speedy recovery.”
The New Jersey State Police also responded and are the lead agency for the investigation. New Jersey State Police Lt. Brian Polite said the State Police Marine Unit reported that the operator of the skiff boat, 26-year-old Chan-Hee Kang of Hainesport, died as a result of injuries suffered in the crash.
