VINELAND – The Southern Regional baseball team the 11th seed shocked 6th seeded Vineland 5-3 Wednesday afternoon in the South Jersey, Group 4 tournament. Southern won in 8 innings in this first round contest.

The Rams move on to host Friday’s quarterfinals against 14th seeded Jackson Memorial which advanced by upsetting third-seeded Shawnee, 5-1.

The game was played at Cumberland County College due to poor field conditions at Vineland. Pat Barrett had an RBI double in the top of the first. Vineland matched that when Lou Pinotti had a single that scored Shawn Vazquez in the second.

In the top of the eighth, Southern scored twice on three hits. The Rams held the game in the bottom of the eighth even though Vineland had the bases loaded. Coach Keith Cocuzza’s squad prevailed.

Barrett went 3-for-4 with two RBI and pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing one earned run. Reliever Nick Simone got the save by keeping Vineland from scoring in the bottom of the eighth.

“This team continues to amaze us with their willingness to never give up,” said Coach Cocuzza. “They treat the game right and the game treats them well right back.”
