STAFFORD - The Stafford and Long Beach Island community has had a wonderful time watching the football career of Mike Gesicki. Mike was a star football, basketball and volleyball player at Southern Regional High School.
Mike continued in college as a standout Tight End for Penn State University. Mike proved himself to be one of the all time greats at Penn State under Coach James Franklin.
On Friday evening, Gesicki was drafted in the National Football League by the Miami Dolphins.
After two great seasons with the Penn State Nittany Lions and an incredible effort in the NFL Scouting Combine, the athletic tight end was picked by the pass game-needy Miami Dolphins in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft, going No. 42 overall. The Dolphins gain a great seam-threat, pass-catching tight end that will be a great asset to the Dolphins passing game.
One Dolphin fan,Omar Kelly tweeted "The Dolphins have selected Penn State tight end Mike Gesicki, who is an athletic freak."
In four years at Penn State, Gesicki caught 129 passes for 1,481 yards and 15 touchdowns. He set career highs as a senior with 57 catches and nine touchdowns. At 6-foot-6 and 247 pounds, he is a great red-zone threat.
The Stafford and Long Beach Island community are overjoyed at the draft on Friday night. Here is a video of a reaction as the announcement took place on ESPN tonight as patrons watched at the Mainland at Holiday Inn in Manahawkin.
