STAFFORD - The Southern Regional Boys Golf team lost a number of key golfers to graduation last year. This season Coach Jeff Reilly had a lot of young golfers in the mix for key positions. Reilly has been pleasantly surprised because the Rams are currently undefeated on the season with a record of 8-0.
This past Monday, April 8, Southern's squad competed in the prestigious Garden State Cup against 20 of the best teams in the state. The squad finished in 13th place with a very good team score of 346.
Jeff Reilly, Jr. shot a team and personal best score of 81 to card a Top 20 finish. Lasse Lehmann and Pete Fabian each score 88 and Jon Sheehan had an 89 to round out the scoring. The tournament was held at Blue Heron Pines in Galloway Township.
The Rams have also won four dual matches this week. On Tuesday, Southern had a huge win over a very strong St. Rose team 166-168. Lasse Lehmann's 39 and Pete Fabian’s 40 led the way.
On Wednesday, Southern defeated Toms River East at Bey Lea Golf Course in Toms River. Jeff Reilly and Lasse Lehmann each carded 41’s to lead the team.
On Thursday, the Rams won a tri-match vs Brick Memorial and Jackson Memorial at Hidden Creek Golf Club. Lasse Lehmann led the way with a 41. Jon Sheehan and Pete Fabian each had 44 and Jeff Reilly rounded out the scoring with a 45. The Rams host Manchester today to close out a very busy week.
"The team has always had a great deal of success over the past few years. I am really proud of this group as they had huge shoes to fill from the graduating class of 2018," said Coach Reilly. "This group has shown tremendous passion and desire to improve each day this season. It is a huge accomplishment for them to start the season so well. They will face many big challenges in the coming weeks but this group is doing a great job and representing our school in great fashion."
