SOUTH BRUNSWICK- The Southern Regional Boys Volleyball lost a tough contest to Old Bridge in the overall State Championship match on Thursday evening at South Brunswick High School. The championship was a three set contest of extreme intensity.
Southern started out a bit slow and lost the first set 25-22. The Rams battled back winning the second set 25-21 but lost in the final set 25-23.
Southern has been to the NJ State title match an amazing 10 straight years. They have won on six occasions in 2009, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2016 and last year 2017.
The Rams had a great season and they have much to look forward to next season with a strong cast of players returning especially key contributors from yesterday's finals Matt Maxwell and Zach Hem. Hem had eight kills, three blocks and 1 assist. Maxwell had four service points, four kills, 38 assists and four digs.
Some of Southern's other key performances came from Arvind Kumar with 14 kills and 9 digs. Shane Bent had 11 kills and three blocks. These are just a few of the statistics from a team that had a tremendous season.
Coach Maxwell was proud of his team. Looking at the faces of the players after the loss, they looked like they are determined and ready to get ready for next season. Maxwell also expressed appreciation for all of his seniors. recognizing their significant contribution to the program.
Southern finished the season with an overall record of 37-5.
