STAFFORD - The Southern Regional Boys Basketball squad won their Shore Conference opener against Red Bank Regional 60-58 at home tonight. 
 

Red Bank used a stifling defenive strategy in an attempt to slow down Southern's high scoring Peyton Wejnert.  Wejnert averages 29 points a game this season.  The Bucs doubled team Peyton throughout the contest.  

Midway through the third quarter Wejnert got into foul trouble and had to leave the game for over 4 minutes.  At that point Southern was down by double digits, but the team fought hard during that stretch and got back to within 5 at the end of the third quarter 48-43 led by strong play of Mark Valeriani and Jake Dubois.

The Rams regained the lead with 3:05 left in the game after Wejnert made two free throws.  Southern led 54-53.   Wejnert scored again to give Southern a 56-53 cushion.  

Southern was up 58-55 when Red Bank's Will Reardon made a 3 to tie game at 58 with 1:19 left in game.  Southern Regional held the ball until Ethan Dubois drove the lane with 10 seconds left and put Southern ahead 60-58.  Red Bank was foiled in their attempt to score by strong defense by Southern resulting in a turnover with one second left.      

Peyton Wejnert led Southern with 24 points.  Mark Valeriani scored 17 and Ethan Dubois scored 10 and had 9 assists in the win.  

Will Reardon scored 20 points to lead Red Bank. 

Southern's record improved to 15-7.  The Rams advance to the next round in the Shore Conference Tournament Thursday at the #3 seed Manasquan at 6:30 PM.
 

Ethan Dubois Sets School Career Assist Record

Ethan Dubois broke the Southern career assist record tonight.  He broke the record of 452 previously held by Southern Assistant Coach Joe Nagy.  Dubois is heading to Elizabethtown College to play college ball.
