STAFFORD, NJ - Southern Regional's football team won their third straight game with Friday night's 28-7 win over Toms River South. Southern has won 5 out of their last 6 contests.
Joe Miele opened up the scoring that gave the Rams a 7-0 lead with a 12-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Starting quarterback Sam Cammarata was injured in the game. His backup, Sean Distelcamp came on in relief and had a strong game. Distelcamp threw two touchdowns in the second quarter. In the third quarter, Matt Barnett made an interception for Southern and ran it back 55 yards for a touchdown to complete the scoring on the evening.
Coach Chuck Donohue was pleased with the victory. "I felt that this past week was not a good week for our team in practice. Perhaps they had a bit of a hangover knowing that last week's victory sealed a playoff game for us" said Donohue. "This was Senior Night and I was pleased to see our senior players get some additional playing time. Our defense was rocky in the first half but did a good job in the second half. Now it is time for us to get to work and prepare for the playoffs next week."
Southern earned a 7 seed in the South Jersey Group V playoffs. They will play Rancocas Valley, the number 2 seed at Rancocas Valley. The day and time will be announced.
