WALL, NJ - The Southern Regional Ice Hockey team defeated Middletown South, 5-4, to capture the 2016 Dowd Cup Championship at the Jersey Shore Arena in Wall Thursday night.
Last season, Southern won its first division championship and advanced to the NJSIAA Public A quarterfinals. Entering the last period the Rams had a three-goal lead. Middletown South scored twice to get within a goal.
Jack Conrad scored to put the Rams up, 5-2, early in the third period. He was assisted by sophomore Paul Keyes. Middletown South made it close on goals by Ryan Lambert and Alex Demaio.
Southern scored three times in the second pioerd. Paul Keyes scored his seventh goal of season and Nick Godfrey scored twice. Southern's first goal was scored by Matt Scalvino only 29 seconds into the contest.
Southern heads into the Southern Regional head wit momentum. They are the seventh seed in the NJSIAA Public A Tournament. They host Parsippany in an opening round contest Monday at 7:30 PM.
