STAFFORD — The Southern Regional Football team hosted the No. 5 seeded Vineland High School team on Friday night. The Rams jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the third quarter, but Vineland exploded with 24 straight points to defeat Southern 24-21.
Southern appeared to be heading towards an easy victory after big plays by wide receiver and running back Will DeVane.
DeVane caught a 77-yard TD pass from Cole Robinson on the Rams’ first possession of the second half to give Southern a 14-0 lead.
A little more than a minute later, DeVane broke free on a sweep and scored on a 55-yard run to make it 21-0 Southern with 9:07 left.
Vineland did not give up and Nazir Broome scored a 57 yard touchdown run on Vineland's next possession.
Tyreem Powell scored next on a 1 yard run to cut Southern's lead to 21-12 after the failed two point conversion attempt failed. Broome scored again on a 5 yard run to cut the deficit to 21-18. Finally, Vineland quarterback Powell scored the winning touchdown on an 8-yard run up the middle with 52 seconds left in the game.
