EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - The Amazin' Rams defeated Egg Harbor Township 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon to propel Southern into the South Jersey Group IV finals! This is Southern's first visit to the state finals since 1987. That is correct, it has been 30 years since Southern's baseball team has been this successful. .
Coach Keith Cocuzza has done a marvelous job rebuilding this program with a bunch of strong and committed athletes. The amazing 11 seeded Rams defeated the second seeded EHT Eagles, a team with a bunch of talented seniors. Southern, however has plenty of solid seniors on their squad also.
The game went into extra innings. Joey Robertson scored on a single by Nolan Watson to put the Rams in the lead for good in the top of the eighth inning. Zach Fillmore pitched a scoreless eighth and the Rams were victorious. Starter Pat Barrett gave up two runs in 4 2/3 innings. Zach Fillmore came in to stop the Eagles in the fifth inning pitching the final 3 1/3 scoreless innings.
Nolan Watson was 3 for 4 and had the game winning RBI. Zach Oddo was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Joey Robertson was 1 for 4 with an RBI and scoring the game winner.
When asked his response after today's victory, Coach Cocuzza simply said "I am so proud of this team."
The Rams move onto the South Jersey Group IV championship game. More details will follow.
