State of NJ Offering Free Pedestrian and Bicyclist Shuttles This Summer Over Rt. 72 Bridge


STAFFORD – A free shuttle bus if being offered by the NJ Department of Transportation this summer due to the Rt. 72 Causeway Bridge construction project.  

The free shuttle bus into LBI runs from Marsha Drive in Stafford with a stop at 3rd Street on Bonnet Island, and return to the mainland with a stop at the Public Access Parking Lot on Bay Avenue after the bridge crossing. The shuttle is available every day of the week due to the sidewalk beign closed.

Anyone who violates the temporary restriction by trying to walk or bicycle across the bridge will be subject to a significant fine.

The construction of the new bridge began in 2013 and is not expected to be completed until 2020. The new span, which handles all of the LBI traffic was completed in May 2016 will be the eastbound bridge.  The existing span which is undergoing intensive rehabilitation will serve westbound travelers.
