The dinner was started in 2010 when several parishioners of St. Marys decided to deliver some hot meals in takeout containers to local homeless community members living out of their cars. They hung up signs in areas where those people frequented, and handed the meals out near the Manahawkin Lake. The next year, the dinner was expanded and moved to the St Mary's Parish Center with the blessing of Monsignor Ken, and steadily grew from there. The dinner was conceived with two populations in mind - those who are in need of a hot meal, and those who may otherwise be alone on Christmas. In addition to the hot meal, there are clothes (such as hats, gloves, coats, and scarves) and canned goods handed out. Last year, we had over 160 guests and 80 to 100 volunteers from many churches and across all faiths join us.
