MIDDLETOWN - The Southern Regional Girls Soccer team competed in the Shore Conference Tournament on Tuesday against Middletown North. Southern was the underdog being the No. 20 seed and they found themselves stacked up against the Lions, the No. 13 seed.
The stunning news is that the improbable happened this afternoon and into the evening.
Southern defeated Middletown North 2-1. The contest was tied 1-1 after regulation, tied after each of the first two overtime periods. It all came down to penalty kicks. Two rounds of penalty kicks. All in all in the penalty kick phase Southern made six shots and Middletown North made five. Therefore the Lady Rams of Southern wind up being 2-1 victors in this long contest.
Coach Katie Hartkopf commented "Amazing team effort and achievement tonight. End of regulation 1-1 ; double over time; double rounds of PKs with an advancement into second round of SCT."
Gianna Simon scored off a pass from Megan Lockwood in the first half for Southern.
Katelyn Reid scored off a feed from Darien Rinn for the Lions.
Middletown North had 21 shots on goal and the Rams had 12. Lindsey Selert had 19 saves for Southern.
Coach Hartkopf when asked about the next SCT contest said the date is not finalized but she believes they will play Toms River North.
Southern's overall record improves to 6-4-1 on the season.
