TOMS RIVER — Southern has a new coach, long time assistant Dan Roy.  Don't expect Roy to change much from former coach John Stout's program. Dan has been with the program for 17 years. The program has been ultra successful.

The Rams defeated Toms River East 55-15 in Roy's opener.  Here are the match results:

  • 113 pound: Nicholas Delorenzo (Toms River East) d. Chris Lubeski, 11-4.
  • 120 pound: Edward Totten (Toms River East) d. Jayson Scerbo, 5-2.
  • 126 pound: Joe McCullough (Toms River East) d. Nick Bennett, 8-5.
  • 132 pound: Michael Conklin (Toms River East) p. Nate Bischoff, 3:15
  • 138 pound: Eddie Hummel (Southern) p. Anthony Lawrence, 3:11
  • 145 pound: Jason Sari (Southern) md. Ariel Lopez, 9-1.
  • 152 pound: Cole Velardi (Southern) p. James Racanelli, 2:41
  • 160 pound: Robert Woodcock (Southern) won by forfeit.
  • 170 pound: Brock Lefkus (Southern) d. , 22-7 (TF 4:31).
  • 182 pound: Ben LoParo (Southern) md. Ahmed Yusaf, 13-2.
  • 195 pound: Stephen Jennings (Southern) p. David Casas, 0:53
  • 220 pound: Gabe Murray (Southern) p. Diego Leoner, 4:39
  • 285 pound: JT Cornelius (Southern) p. Thomas Pravata, 0:30

The Rams were 20-4 in 2018-19. Their accolades include Group 5 champ, the South Jersey Group 5 champ the District 29 team champ and it finished third in Shore Conference Class South behind Toms River North and Jackson Memorial.

This season Southern returns a number of winning wrestlers. The Rams will have multiple newcomers between 106 and 132, but in the middle and up top, Southern is solid.

In the weights between 138 an 160, is Robert Woodcook (33-6) and Nik Lawson (8-14), Jason Sari (6-7) Ben LaParo (26-13), JT Cornelius (38-6), GabeMurray (7-6) and Jayden Smith (16-8). Freshman newcomers to watch are Conor Collins (106) and Cole Velardi in the middleweights.

The Rams host the Robin Leff Tournament today at Southern.
