HOWELL — Southern's Cole Velardi (24-3) pinned Nick Acque (18-11) to lead Southern to a dramatic victory over Howell in the South Jersey Group V championship on Friday evening in Howell.
Southern, the No. 3 seed came through big time by defeating top seeded Howell in their gymnasium.
This is Southern Regional 14th sectional championship in school history and the first for new coach Dan Roy.
Southern was behind when junior Matt Brielmeier (20-7) came up to face freshman Isaiah Fenton (12-6). Brielmeier came through with a 7-2 decision to tie the match at 30-30.
Velardi was the hero with pin in the final matchup of the evening.
Southern also got pins from Robert Woodcock, JT Cornelius, Conor Collins and Eddie Hummel.
