SUMMIT, NJ - Village Trattoria owner Angelo Vayas passed away at his home May 24 after a battle with brain cancer. Vayas, a resident of Maplewood, was 50.

Born in Thessaloniki, Greece, Vayas arrived in the United States at the age of 12, and started working when was 13. Wanting to become a restaurant owner, Vayas realized his dream in 1993 when he opened Village Trattoria in Maplewood, and subsequently expanded with locations in Summit and South Orange.

Family and giving back to the community were two personal passions for Vayas, who is survived by wife Mary Marano Vayas; children Aris, Joseph, and Antonio Vayas; his mother Evangelia Tsamtsdis Vayas, and brothers of Jimmy and Peter Vayas. He was preceded in death by his late father Aristidis Vayas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Caroline Fund, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization seeking to raise funds and awareness to directly support the cutting-edge brain and spine cancer research preformed at the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center. The Caroline Fund was established in 2013 in memory of Caroline Vandemark, who lost her life to glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer at the age of 22.

Extra Time

It was close to 70 minutes into the match and I had to go to the bathroom.  Badly.

As fans watching the World Cup know too well, bathroom breaks are a serious dilemma, especially for those who don’t have a TV in the loo.  This biological necessity is exasperated by beer, which during World Cup matches also fuels a strong propensity to throw chairs and instigate riots.
