SUMMIT, NJ - An 18 year-old Summit resident, a senior at Morristown-Beard School in Morristown, has died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, in an incident that occurred in the parking lot of St. Teresa of Avila Church just prior to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 5.

In a statement issued Friday, the Summit Police Department:

"At approximately 6:50 p.m. on 5/5/16, patrols responded to the parking lot of St. Teresa’s R.C. Church, located on the corner of Morris Ave. and Locust Dr., on a report of an apparent suicide.

When police units arrived on the scene, they discovered an unresponsive 18-year-old Summit man, with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, lying in the rear passenger compartment of a small SUV.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is being investigated by the Summit Police Department along with the Union County Medical Examiner’s Office."

On May 5, Morristown-Beard School, in a statement by Headmaster Peter J. Caldwell, posted the following on their website:

"I have some very sad news to share with you. Earlier this evening we were informed that Senior Matt Giaquinto has died. We are stunned with grief at this tragic news, but remain ready to serve the needs of the MBS community during this difficult time. We will suspend all classes and school activities tomorrow, Friday, May 6 (there will be no bus service), but we will open the campus for any member of the community who wishes to be here. We will have counselors on hand throughout the day, and will share all relevant information with the community as soon as it is available. We are asking all MBS faculty and staff to be at School by 8 a.m. for a meeting in Kirby Chapel."

Shortly after 10 p.m., Summit Superintendent of Schools June Chang, in an e-mail to parents, issued the following statement:

"Dear Summit Community,

Tonight, the life of young Summit resident was lost in a tragedy occurring in the parking lot of St. Teresa’s Church.

Although this young man did not attend Summit High School, we, as a community, feel this loss and our thoughts are with his family and friends.

We will have counselors available for any students and staff members who may need support during this difficult time."
