SUMMIT, NJ - According to the Summit Police Department, last night, August 18th, a 15-year-old Summit youth was stabbed during an altercation at the Brookside Exxon gas station located at 35 Summit Avenue by 19-year-old gas station employee Ryan Zahn, a resident of Springfield. The police arrested Zahn today on charges of aggravated assault second degree and possession of a weapon for unlawful use.
The police report that Zahn exchanged words with the youth and a physical altercation ensued. According to a witness, during the event, Zahn brandished a knife and stabbed the 15-year-old in the abdomen. The Summit Police report that the injured youth then fled on foot and met up with some friends who drove the youth to Overlook Hospital. When Overlook staff upgraded his condition as moderate to critical, he was transported to Morristown Memorial Hospital Trauma Center .
According to the police, two of the youth’s friends, Kirsten Crawford, 22, of Summit, and an unidentified male, then went to the gas station and confronted Zahn. Witnesses report that Crawford proceeded to assault Zahn, punching him numerous times in his face, knocking him to the ground before fleeing the scene. The Summit Police arrested Crawford on charges of aggravated assault third degree.
Kirsten Crawford was remanded to Union County Jail in default of $35,000 bail. Zahn was taken to Overlook Hospital for treatment of his injuries and was later released after posting $50,000 bail.
