SUMMIT, NJ - Holding their opponents to a remarkable six points through three quarters, the Summit High School Girls Varsity Basketball Team got a much-needed win, and a comfortable one at that, by beating Marion P. Thomas Charter School of Newark 59-17 at the Main Gym.
Junior captain Christina Richson led The Maroon & White with 16 points, while fellow captain Anna DiSibio and junior Mya Thompson added 10 points each. Summit, which welcomed Catherine Maloney and Eliza Rustum back into the lineup, had nine players score to improve to 5-11 on the season.
Bella Cusumano had eight points, Micaela Nardino and Rustum each snagged six boards, and Maloney contributed six points.
The opening eight minutes saw the Hilltoppers sprint out to an 18-3 lead, then go one better -- as in one point better -- when they claimed the second quarter by a 19-3 margin.
Up 37-6 at the half, the outcome was clearly decided but Summit went out and pitched a 15-0 shutout in the third quarter for good measure, making it 52-6 going to the final frame.
Summit next travels to Roselle Catholic January 31 for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
