The Connection is offering a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) course Monday, June 24 through Friday, June 28, 10am-4pm. Participants will be certified to teach a variety of classes for infants through adults. The class also includes the American Red Cross Fundamentals of Instructor (FIT) Training course.
The course will follow the American Red Cross training protocol. Through videos, group discussions and hands-on practice, participants will learn the skills needed to teach water safety, including the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses, six levels of Learn-to-Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics and two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics.
As a prerequisite, students must demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills: 25 yards of Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breaststroke, Elementary Backstroke, and Sidestroke, as well as 15 yards of Butterfly, and the ability to tread water and back float for 1 minute each.
Participants must be 16 by the completion of the course, attend all class sessions, demonstrate competency in all homework assignments and activities, successfully complete and prepare for three practices, and score an 80% or higher on the written exam.
The Connection offers many American Red Cross certification and recertification courses throughout the year including Lifeguard Training, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguarding and CPR/AED Recertification courses, and now Water Safety Instructor certification.
The cost of the Water Safety Instructor course is $350. In addition, $65 annual membership to The Connection is required. Please bring a bathing suit, towel for water skills and proof of age.
