SUMMIT, NJ - Stung from the upset loss to Mountain Lakes that they suffered on their home turf less than 24 hours earlier, the Summit High School Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team was akin to a hornet's nest that some poor, unfortunate soul had disturbed -- its occupants agitated and ready to do some stinging of their own.
The next team that happened to wander in the Hilltoppers path was likely to feel their wrath and, sure enough, when Roxbury came calling the Gaels got stung -- 20 times.
Senior captains Katia Carnevale (5), Anna Griffith (4) and Julia Szynal (3) combined for a dozen goals alone, and six other girls from the 07901 also score at least a goal as Summit pummeled Roxbury 20-5 on the Upper Turf Field.
Sophomore Dianna D'Onfrio (5) and junior Sarah McGhee (1) combined to make five saves in goal for the Hilltoppers, who improved their season mark to 7-2.
Summit led 13-4 at the end of 25 minutes of play, then stapled a 7-1 second half onto the proceedings for good measure. Junior Sophie Zachara and sophomore Rileigh Meyer each had a pair of goals, while junior Bridget Moriarty, sophomore Anna Gohring, freshman Maggie DeFabio and classmate Ashley Thomas -- with her first-ever Varsity goal -- all also found the back of the net.
Moriarty (3), senior captain Anna Huntley-Robertson (2), junior Kaleigh Driscoll, Meyer and DeFabio all had helpers.
Summit (7-2) will next travel to Ridgewood April 20 for a truly heavyweight lacrosse bout against the currently undefeated at 9-0 Maroons. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
