SUMMIT, NJ - Celebrating two decades of service to families in Summit and the surrounding communities, The Area Baby Center (ABC) will host a 'birthday party' January 24, from 6 - 9 p.m., at the Beacon Hill Club. There, the ABC will recognize former Advisory Board members and thank its many supporters, Donations to attend the event are optional, but always welcome.
“The community has been very supportive of our mission, so we wanted to do something special this year in thanks,” said Denise D’Alberti, President of the ABC Board of Advisors. ABC provides diapers and baby supplies to families in need, every two weeks, during the first two years of a child’s life. Over the past 20 years, hundreds of local families have benefited from the organization’s help.
The ABC was started in 1999 by two friends, Barbara Pasciucco and Barbara Densen, as a response to a need voiced by a fellow volunteer in Elizabeth. They formed ABC as a project of the Summit Women’s Club, and several of the original members are still active with ABC today.
The organization is run by a volunteer advisory board of 12 women who staff the bi-weekly distributions, host an annual Christmas party for their current clients, manage the stock of diapers to meet client needs, and handle the operational aspects of running a non-profit. The ABC is funded by grants from local organizations, such as the Luminary Fund and the Junior League of Summit, and individual contributions. Space for distributions and storage is provided by the Summit Fortnightly Club at Twin Maples.
“We would love to have some new board members join us,” said D’Alberti. “It’s a great group of women, and we get to know the people we’re helping.”
